Announces The 2021 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad

[ad_1] is excited to announce the 2021 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad, a incredible online chess event open to chess federations from all over the world. Federations are invited to send their best players and top juniors to compete in rapid chess matches for gold medals! The event, which kicks off on August 13, will run on’s server and bring together the best players on the planet.

Last year, this remarkable global event featured 163 national teams and over 1,500 players from all six continents. This year, the Online Olympiad is expected to reach the same epic proportions, as more than 150 countries are likely to participate.

It’s not only the number of participating teams that impressed during last year’s event. On YouTube alone, the event attracted more than 65,000 concurrent viewers, who were on their edge of their seats as the final unfolded.

China, as the virtual host of this year’s event, will have two teams participating. Will world number three GM Ding Liren and three-time women’s world champion GM Ju Wenjun lead the Chinese team to gold?

Fans will also want to pay close attention to the Indian and Russian teams, the two gold medalists from last year’s event. After GM Humpy Koneru defeated her opponent in a nerve-wracking armageddon tiebreak, the Indian team reached the final of an Olympiad for the first time in history. Alongside her, other chess legends such as GMs Viswanathan Anand, Vidit Gujrathi, and Harika Dronavalli were stars of the Indian squad.

As always, the Russian team was represented by a strong line-up of elite players. Among them, fans rooted for none other than the world championship challenger, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi. Other boards fielded incredible talents like GM Daniil Dubov and former women’s world champion GM Alexandra Kosteniuk.

The second edition of the Online Olympiad will receive the support and sponsorship of the Shenzhen authorities, which include the Shenzhen Longgang District Culture and Sports Bureau, the Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, Shenzhen Chess Academy, Shenzhen Pengcheng Chess Club. Simaland, the Russian wholesale online store and proud sponsor of the Candidates tournament 2020-21, will also be a partner for the Online Olympiad 2021.
