Nepomniachtchi Wins, Shevchenko Nearly Sweeps Titled Tuesday

GM Kirill Shevchenko, who also won Titled Tuesday on June 15, 2021, won the early tournament on February 8 and finished third in the late tournament. GM Ian Nepomniachtchi won the late tournament.

Both players won outright, Shevchenko with 10/11 early and Nepomniachtchi with 9.5/11 late. The two players agreed to a draw before their game in the final round of the second tournament, preventing Shevchenko from duplicating GM Hikaru Nakamura’s two wins last week but guaranteeing him a cash position in both events.

Early Tournament

485 players joined the early tournament, including GM Alexander Grischuk on a rest day at the FIDE Grand Prix. Nakamura, who is also at the Grand Prix, decided not to play.

Shevchenko survived a third-round loss to keep it his only blemish of the tournament on the way to victory with 10 points of 11. Tied on 9/10 with GM Nils Grandelius and GM Arjun Erigaisi, Shevchenko defeated Erigaisi in the final round while Grandelius drew Chess.com’s own and fifth-place finisher GM Robert Hess.

Shevchenko won but Grandelius was undefeated with +8 =3 for sole second place on 9.5/11 after drawing Erigaisi and Hess in the final two rounds. Grandelius played a nearly flawless game in round eight against GM Vladimir Dobrov.

Late Tournament

340 players participated in the late tournament, which represented (as did the early tournament) a small climb from the previous week as players adjust to the new format and times.

Live broadcast of the late tournament, hosted by GM Aman Hambleton.

Nepomniachtchi only drew against his first-round opponent, but by round seven he would only face eventual top-10 finishers. He drew Shevchenko and GM Raunak Sadhwani, but Nepomniachtchi defeated fourth-place GM Jeffery Xiong in round nine and second-place NM Valery Sviridov in round 10.

The 10th round game was a 132-move marathon, with Nepomniachtchi on the brink for most of it before pulling off the win.

Places two through five all scored nine points and were settled on tiebreaks. Sviridov recovered from his difficult round 10 to defeat GM Dmitry Andreikin in 104 moves in round 11 and take second.
