Chess For A Cause: Join Our Tournament

With the holiday season nearly upon us, this year, Chess.com is calling on all chess fans to be part of a very special campaign that will help bring education and the joy of chess to up to 5,000 children.

Chess For A Cause is Chess.com’s new initiative in partnership with the non-profit Chess in Slums Africa and its founder, Tunde Onakoya, to raise money for education and scholarships in 2024.

Our first event aims to raise $50,000 and get the campaign off to a good start. It will be on December 22, when we’ll be hosting a fundraising tournament open to all—but please don’t feel you have to wait for that. We’re collecting donations now, and they will be very much appreciated!

The mission of Chess in Slums Africa is to use the game of chess to empower children from impoverished backgrounds, and Chess.com is hoping to mobilize the chess community to support that. Here’s Tunde on why it’s important:

The blitz event on December 22 will start at 12 p.m. ET / 18:00 CET / 10:30 p.m. IST, with a bunch of prizes offered by Chess.com, Chessable, and ChessKid.

Onakoya will host the event together with GM Maurice Ashley, the Jamaica-born player who made history by becoming the first-ever African-American grandmaster in 1999, and Chess.com’s IM Kassa Korley.

Chess in Slums aims to help out-of-school and disadvantaged children in Africa by offering them chess training, career mentorship, the chance to acquire new skills, and scholarships.

You can join them in rewriting the narrative by taking part in our campaign. Sign up for the first Arena Tournament and “Make every move count.”
