159 players from 28 nations took part in the open in 2012. Compared to 128 players in 2011, this shows the great interest in this tournament. With support of Malta Tourism Authority and Cheverny Investments Ltd.12 grandmasters and 7 IM came to the island south of Sicily.
Players from the north of europe were especially attracted by the 20 degrees and many hours of sunlight. Maltese culture and history could be explored during the day, as the games began at 5 p.m. The particants from the USA, Canada and Ecuador had the longest trips to arrive at the tournament.
GM Bartolomej Heberla who took 1st place with 7.5 points from 9 rounds. GM Marian Petrov from Bulgaria had to settle for second despite having the same amount of points. In 3rd International Master Dulio Collutiis from Italy headed a group of 6 players, all on 7 points. Also forming part of this group was chess professional and journalist WGM Alina L.Ami who wrote a great report on chessbase – the report can be seen at: chessbase . She also won the trophy for Best Woman of the tournament.
The Best Junior (under 18) was won by the 12 year old Baldur Teodor Petersson who managed a crucial draw in the last round against Harry Camilleri to clinch top spot. Finally, the trophy for Best Maltese went to current Maltese National Champion CM Colin Pace – who managed 6 points equalling the total of last year s winner GM Brynell. There were also several category prizes – with players split by rating groups.
