Knights co-hosting Sunday chess tourney in city
The Golden Knights of Lockport and the Urban Thinkers Chess Club will host the Daniel J. Johnston Memorial Scholastic Team Chess Championship in Lockport on Sunday.
The tournament for students in grades K through 12 will be held at the Lockport Family YMCA, East Avenue. The organizers are hoping to draw between 64 and 100 participants.
Four unrated games will be played with no elimination. United States Chess Federation rules apply, and all participants must have knowledge of chess rules and play. Play is in four sections: K-4, K-6, K-8 and K-12. Limited supplies are available, so all players are asked to bring any equipment they have.
All players must report between 2:30 and 2:50 p.m. Games are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Four games are to be played overall. An awards ceremony will start at 7:30 p.m.
The entry fee is $8 per player. Teams of four from the same school or club will pay $30. USCF members, girls and YMCA members will pay $5.
Players should register no later than Saturday by sending an email to [email protected]. Include the player’s full name, grade, school, USCF ID number and a parent/guardian name and phone number.
Cash registration fees will be collected at the door on Sunday.
Photographs will be taken during the tournament and awards ceremony. Section champions will qualify to represent the Golden Knights of Lockport at the second annual Juneteenth Scholastic Chess Championship, which is set for June 13 at the Main Place Mall in Buffalo.
