The Kandy District Chess Association launched a project to introduce chess to 5,000 people in the area with a special programme held for parents of students attending Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College. President Kandy Chess Association and Assistant Secretary Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, Rajeendra Kalugampitiya said that the Association will hold similar programmes in order to achieve the goal of getting 5000 young boys and girls to play chess by the end of 2015.

The Principal of the school, N.B.G. Muhandiram and a large number of parents took part in the programme. The Association presented the school with chess equipment with a view to encouraging children to take up the game
