The 2013 Beantown Open, a U.S. Chess Federation rated chess tournament, will be held Saturday, May 11, at the Hyatt Place Hotel, 50 Forbes Rd., Braintree.
The tournament is sponsored by the South Shore Chess Club, a free chess club based in Quincy.
It is open to chess players of all ages and skill levels as long as they are also a member of the U.S. Chess Federation. Players from all over New England will participate.
Competitors will play four timed chess matches regardless of the match outcome. Prizes will offered to the winners of each skill section. In addition, all kids ages 10 and under will receive a special chess prize just for participating.
Players can register online by visiting or register onsite. Cost is $35 per player for those who register (by May 5 or $40 for onsite registration.
Tournament check-in is from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and the first round of matches begin at 10 a.m.
A portion of each entry will be donated to the Massachusetts Chess Association’s Living Memorial Chess Fund Charity which provides chess sets and equipment to schools, libraries, junior chess clubs, human service groups and community groups.
