Grabinsky attended last weekend’s youth championships with his older brother, Aaron Grabinsky, 17, who won four out of six chess games in the under-18 speed round. The older brother also won five out of nine matches in the main chess event.

Joshua Grabinsky also won 7.5 out of nine games in the main event to tie for first place in the under-12 division. After losing a tie-breaker, he earned the silver medal and an international Candidate Master title.

According to a story earlier this year by The Coos Bay World, Aaron Grabinsky became a National Master level in April joining nine other current Oregon chess masters – all of whom are adults.

The Grabinsky brothers from the small Southern Oregon town northeast of Bandon, had competed in the Best of the West Championships in Santa Clara last weekend prior to traveling to Mexico to compete. At that tournament, Joshua Grabinsky tied for second place in his division after winning 4.5 games out of 6.
